"The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery or to peaceful death, that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge" Henderson, 1966
In Celebration of Virginia Avenel Henderson
A tribute, written by Dr. Angela McBride, was originally posted on the Sigma Theta Tau Web site until 1999 when it was removed from the web. Permission was obtained from the web diva at STT to allow the posting of Dr. McBride's tribute here for "theory surfers".
It gives my great pleasure to maintain this page
for Miss Henderson. One memory that I will always cherish is the dinner I and
my colleague, Dr. Ruby Morrison, Professor of Nursing, University of Alabama enjoyed with
the late Miss Henderson at the 1991 NLN convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Just
the two of us and we were privileged to hear Miss Henderson tell of her childhood and the
events that had shaped her most incredible life. Her definition of nursing is one I still
use and I miss her. Dr.
